Locals call this area “el centro” — the San Jose city center — and it’s where everyday life buzzes. Street vendors sell fresh mango slices with lime and chili. Traffic honks. Music pours out of open doorways. It’s chaotic, yes, but also full of stories.
Best Things to Do in Downtown in San Jose

- Teatro Nacional – This stunning European-style theater is a cultural icon. Even if you don’t catch a show, grab a coffee in the café and take in the atmosphere.
- Museo del Oro (Gold Museum) – Housed underground in Plaza de la Cultura, this place is weirdly peaceful and full of shimmering pre-Columbian artifacts.
- Mercado Central – A full sensory experience. Part spice market, part maze, part souvenir haven. Also: great cheap food.
- Barrio Amón & Otoya – Just north of downtown, these historic neighborhoods are full of colorful old mansions, galleries, and cool little cafes.

Is San Jose Worth Visiting?
I used to say no. Honestly. I used to tell people to get out of San Jose as fast as possible and head for the beaches or jungles. But over the years — especially after walking it with locals — I’ve changed my mind.
San Jose downtown is worth at least a day or two. Not for scenic beauty, but for understanding Costa Rica’s soul beyond its landscapes. It’s messy, layered, alive. It’s where protest marches and art festivals share the same plaza. Where you can eat a $2 empanada and then sip wine in a rooftop bar an hour later.
Where to Stay in the City Center
You’ll find everything from hostels to boutique hotels right in San Jose city center. Try to stay within walking distance of Avenida Central — it’s the spine of the city. Some solid picks include:
- Hotel Presidente – Chic, central, and with a great rooftop bar.
- Selina San Jose – If you’re into social hostels with coworking vibes.
