It’s technically a bridge over the Tárcoles River, off Route 34—aka, Costanera Sur. But unofficially? It’s the Costa Rica Crocodile Bridge. Either way, it’s about 25 minutes north of Jaco and about 1.5 hours outside of San José, making it an easy pit stop for those road-tripping along the coast.
There’s a small parking lot right before the bridge (watch out for vendors and potholes) and two access pathways that lead to the bridge itself for an overhead view of the monstrous battalion below. No entrance fee, no tour guide needed—just a car, legs, and good luck with your cellphone.
Why Are There So Many Crocs Here?
Short answer? It’s home. The Tárcoles River is one of the most crocodile-infested rivers in the world — and yes, that’s an actual fact, not just local legend. The American crocodiles here can grow over 15 feet long, and they’ve found this slow-moving, warm river to be the perfect hangout.
