You know how some people describe a hike as “invigorating” or “refreshing”? Yeah — hiking Cerro Chirripó isn’t that. It’s more like: “My legs are noodles, I haven’t seen Wi-Fi in two days, and I just cried a little at sunrise because the view was so ridiculous.”
And that’s exactly why you should do it.
Climbing Cerro Chirripó, the highest mountain in Costa Rica at 3,820 meters, is not just a physical challenge — it’s an emotional detox, a full mental reset, and possibly one of the coolest things you’ll ever do with your feet.

Trekking to Cerro Chirripó – What’s the Deal?
First off, you don’t just roll up and start walking. This is a protected area inside Chirripó National Park, and access is limited to a small number of hikers per day. There’s a whole system for permits, lodging, meal reservations… and yes, we help with all of that (because trying to book it solo is a game of digital Russian roulette).
But logistics aside — this trail is a beast. You start in a small mountain village called San Gerardo de Rivas, and from there it’s a straight shot into the clouds.
Day 1? 14.5 kilometers of climbing. And I mean climbing — over 2,000 meters of elevation gain. It’s long, it’s humid, it’s occasionally muddy, and it will make you question your life choices somewhere around kilometer 10.

But Don’t Worry — There’s a Mountain Lodge
At the end of that brutal first day, there’s a reward: Crestones Base Lodge, sitting at around 3,400 meters. And let me tell you, after 8+ hours on your feet, this place feels like the Ritz-Carlton.
Okay — not exactly like the Ritz. There’s no spa, and you sleep in shared bunk rooms with the occasional snorer. But it’s warm, dry, and full of fellow hikers swapping stories over plates of rice and beans. You’ll sleep like a rock. Mostly because you are, in fact, a rock.

Trekking to Cerro Chirripó and Sunrise on the Summit?
The next morning, before the sun even thinks about rising, you head out for the final 5 km push to the summit. It’s cold, it’s dark, and it’s dead silent — except for the crunch of your boots and the occasional shooting star overhead.
And then, you get to the top. 3,820 meters. And if the weather plays nice? You’ll see both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea in one sweeping, golden, cinematic view.
That moment — wrapped in wind, sweat, and awe — is hard to describe. But I promise, it’s worth every sore muscle.
Why This Trek Is So Special
Cerro Chirripó isn’t just a tall mountain. It’s a journey through ecosystems — from dense jungle to elfin forests to wide-open páramo that feels like Patagonia’s cousin. You’ll pass waterfalls, weird rock formations, highland hummingbirds, and if you’re lucky, you might spot a tapir minding its own business in the mist.
And maybe it’s the altitude talking, but the whole thing feels… bigger than you. In a good way.
Thinking of Going to Cerro Chirripó?
You don’t need to be a pro athlete — but you do need decent fitness, good shoes, and a bit of mental grit. It’s not a stroll. But if you like the idea of testing your limits and coming home with a story that starts with “so there I was, standing on the roof of Costa Rica…,” then this is for you.
We can set you up with a full Cerro Chirripó trekking tour: permits, lodging, guides, meals, and transport. You focus on hiking — we’ll handle the madness behind the scenes.
