Costa Rica is known for its jungles, volcanos and sloths that move at a fraction of a mile per hour. However, it’s a little-known fact that the underwater experience can be just as exciting, and with two coastlines providing completely different dive experiences, it has cemented itself as one of the top places to go scuba diving in Central America.
Whether you are an amateur or professional diver, some of the best scuba diving in Costa Rica is an experience you’ll never forget with everything from bull sharks to majestic manta rays to some of the most diverse reefs around.
Isla del Caño – The Go-To Dive for Marine Life (South Pacific)
Located off the coast of Uvita, Caño Island is probably the most accessible “wow” dive spot in Costa Rica. The visibility is usually great, and the marine life is no joke — white-tip reef sharks, rays, big schools of jacks, snappers, and even the occasional manta or whale shark.
It’s not a coral garden, but it delivers on action. I’ve had dives here where I barely knew where to look — eagle ray on the left, moray eel on the right, turtle flying by overhead. If you want the best scuba diving in Costa Rica that’s easy to reach and packed with wildlife, this is your spot.
Bat Islands (Islas Murciélago) – For the Bold and Brave (North Pacific)
Now this is not for beginners. The Bat Islands, located in the Santa Rosa National Park area in Guanacaste, are famous for one thing: bull sharks. No cage. Just you, your group, and a whole lot of open ocean.
It’s adrenaline diving with strong currents and deep sites. But if you’ve got the experience and the nerve, it’s one of the most thrilling dives in the region. Also? You’ll probably have the site almost to yourself.
Catalina Islands – Classic Pacific Drama (Near Tamarindo)
The Catalinas are a short boat ride from the northwestern beaches like Tamarindo and Flamingo. These volcanic islets are known for big life — think giant manta rays, turtles, dolphins, and massive schools of fish.
The visibility can be hit-or-miss, but when it’s good, it’s amazing. I’ve had dives where I just hovered in the blue, watching mantas loop around me like gentle underwater aircraft.
Gulf of Papagayo – Beginner Friendly and Surprisingly Rich
Not every dive has to be deep and dramatic. If you’re looking for mellow dives with tons to see, the Papagayo Gulf offers easy access and plenty of macro life, reef fish, and occasional big visitors.
It’s a great place for first-time divers or for those just looking for a laid-back day underwater. And with several operators working out of Playas del Coco, it’s easy to arrange.
The Caribbean Side – Less Visited, Still Worth It
The Caribbean coast doesn’t get as much diving traffic, mostly because of unpredictable conditions. But when it’s calm, spots near Cahuita National Park and Puerto Viejo offer healthy coral, colorful fish, and a completely different vibe from the Pacific.
No bull sharks or mantas, but a lot of charm. And the surface interval comes with reggae music and coconut rice, so there’s that.
