Ideally located on Costa Rica’s South Pacific coast, Uvita is the ideal place to plant yourself, exhale, and contemplate why you haven’t been there before. Uvita has everything you’d want for a tropical vacation—more remote beaches, dense rainforest, waterfalls you can ascend and slide down—and the best animal viewing in the country. Yet Uvita is different, has a certain vibe that sets it apart. Uvita is the perfect location to do nothing or do everything, to go whale watching, catch a wave, or search for the ultimate sunset.
Why Visit Uvita in Costa Rica?
For adventure, nature, and relaxation, look no further than this place. Uvita is also home to Marino Ballena National Park where guests can walk the Whale Tail sandbar, observe migrating humpback whales, and snorkel over coral reefs—all before dinner. And while the ocean offers all this activity, the town is also surrounded by rainforests, waterfalls, and active wildlife, and it’s not nearly as populated as some of the other more touristy spots. Plenty of restaurants, a family-friendly atmosphere, and access to both inland and coastal activities render this town perfect for anyone looking for a taste of authentic Costa Rica.
Top Attractions in Uvita
Uvita may be small, but it boasts plenty of highlight attractions. The renowned Whale Tail beach inside the adjacent national park, a natural waterslide at Uvita Waterfall, and more. Furthermore, there are jungle trails, on-site access to Nauyaca Waterfalls, and quick day trip access to secret, off-the-beaten-path beaches where you can relax.
Marino Ballena National Park
Just a short walk from downtown Uvita is the town treasure, Marino Ballena National Park, and with good reason. This land and sea coastal marine reserve features one of the most awe-inspiring natural formations in all of Costa Rica, the Whale Tail. At low tide, the ocean recedes to expose a sandbar cut out almost perfectly in the shape of a whale’s tail—an ironic occurrence since this is known to be one of the top places in the world to see humpback whales.
The purpose of the park is to preserve the fragile marine ecosystems as much as it is to enjoy the view. Home to more than 13,000 acres of ocean and about ten miles of coastline, it’s a haven for wildlife and a paradise for ocean enthusiasts. Long walks on secluded beaches, snorkeling amidst coral gardens or take a moment to breathe and enjoy. The waters are alive with dolphins, sea turtles, tropical fish. You can even go whale watching through whale season which exists in July–October and December–April. Boats set off from Uvita into the open Pacific Ocean and you just might catch a glimpse of humpbacks breaching, mothers with calves, pods of dolphins swimming up alongside and even breaching right next to your boat.

Just know — Marino Ballena National Park requires a ticket upon entry and payment is by card only. You cannot pay cash at the entrance. Make arrangements, go when the tides are on your side if you want to walk the Whale Tail and definitely ensure you bring reusable water bottles — this is CR in its purest form and they appreciate it that way. Marino Ballena is more than just a national park; it’s part of the essence of natural Costa Rica.
Bamboo forest in Uvita
Just outside the center of town is the Bamboo Forest in Uvita. You’d assume you’d entered a different world for such an unassuming location—it’s quiet, calm, shaded, completely nondescript—but this winding, tranquil path of tall bamboo stalks provides a peaceful and surreal natural green tunnel above. Not to be confused with a tourist trap—and that’s the goal—this bamboo forest is one of Uvita’s best-kept secrets. It has gone unnoticed by many who are on their way to the beach or hurrying to various waterfalls.
Still, if you get the chance to linger in Uvita and attempt to breathe and see a different side of Costa Rica, this little stretch is worth some time out of your day. Photographers love the bamboo’s filtering soft sunlight. Families appreciate that it’s a flat, easy trail for children. Those who enjoy nature appreciate the sounds of rustling leaves and birds undeterred by foot traffic. Ultimately, whether you’re trying to get somewhere else or hoping to find a hidden gem in Uvita, the bamboo forest fosters serenity among the fray of crazy Uvita.
Uvita Waterfall (Catarata Uvita)
It’s another location only minutes from downtown. Uvita waterfall (Catarata Uvita) is a can’t miss while in town. It’s not only a spectacular waterfall that you might expect to find buried in the jungle—but it becomes an entire mini experience. A short walk through the tropical foliage dumps you at a refreshing natural swimming hole, an excellent place to spend some time and cool off midday. What makes this waterfall unique? The streamlined rock face next to the waterfall used by locals and some adventurous tourists as a natural waterslide. That’s right—you can slide down into the natural pool below—safely and with enjoyment once you arrive.
In addition, there’s a small trail that leads to the top of the waterfall, where another swimming hole rests next to the view of the trees. It’s an excellent place for kids, a tranquil retreat with picnic options. Or just a way to cool off after an active morning of tourism. Since it’s not connected to a national park, entry is easy and inexpensive amidst minimal facilities with a laid-back, welcoming atmosphere. Whether you’re on a solo venture, a couple’s retreat, or a family excursion, Uvita Waterfall is one of those local gems that offers so much more than you could ever hope for—and probably a laugh or two while sliding down that waterslide.
