Traveling around Costa Rica with zero plans? Totally possible… if you’ve got all the time in the world. In that case, go ahead, get lost (in the best way) and let the jungle paths and ocean waves guide you.
But now what if you have a set number of days—let’s say about ten? A whole different ball game! Trust me, even general plans make a world of difference around here. There is so much to see and do, you will easily waste a lot of valuable time trying to figure things out on the spot.
That is why I created this super easy-going and practical 10-day itinerary: It hits the highlights, gives a bit of adventure mixed with downtime, and will help to make the most out of this wild and gorgeous land.
Why Plan a Costa Rica Trip Itinerary in Advance?
This being so—Costa Rica is small, true; but it packs a mean punch. One day you are in the rainforest, watching monkeys swing overhead; the next day, you’re on a quiet beach, smoothie in hand—and somehow those two spots are five hours apart. Without some sort of plan, I would say the time wasted investigating turn into more than the time actually spent doing.
Winging it can totally be fun! But with only 10 days? Believe me, you’ll want a bit of structure—nothing crazy, more like the opposite of a minute-to-minute schedule; you just don’t want to be wondering around, helplessly trying not to miss out!
It just makes better sense when you plan. You knew where you’re sleeping, you have a spot on that snorkel tour, you’re not wasting your morning googling “cool stuff near me,” so you can actually chill with everything. Which, let’s be honest, is entirely the reason for coming here in the first place.
10-Day Costa Rica Itinerary: Dive Deeper into Costa Rica’s Natural Beauty
So, you’re thinking about Costa Rica, huh? The hype is justified. It barely seems possible for 10 days to encapsulate every little thing this rather lovely country has on offer. However, it most definitely could if you knew the places. From enormous volcanoes to foggy forests and symphonies of hidden beaches, this tiny patch of the world has enough essence to have your heart forever entwined with it.
This 10-day itinerary in Costa Rica holds your hand in attempting to maximize those days without getting stressed. It’s old-school: no stress; just a perfect mixture of excitement and leisure. Therefore; you get to see the jewels of this lovely country and actually have time to enjoy them.

Day 1-2: San José and the Central Valley
We start your trip in the capital, San José. Here you have the opportunity to get to know the lively capital of Costa Rica. The National Museum and the markets in the center of San José are sights that you should definitely see. Did you know that the gold in the museum is real gold? 😉 And if you love coffee more than gold, you can take a trip to a coffee plantation where you can learn how the country’s famous coffee is grown and processed.
Day 3-5: Arenal Volcano & La Fortuna
A few days here would be of great worth: La Fortuna, where the Arenal volcano reigns and the hot springs soothe. Do you ever feel adventurous? Try canyoning or ride a horse through the amazing rainforest. Hiking or kayaking, whatever you do in Arenal, you will find a great place with the provision for lots to do yet an enticing vibe.
And as for hidden treasures, there are several places where you can enjoy the hot springs for free. Although it is true that all the surrounding expensive hotels are doing everything they can to ruin it… Welcome to a place where money is more important than people… But it is still possible and you don’t have to pay anyone!
Day 6-7: Monteverde
Monteverde is, beyond question, a natural paradise. Ziplining and walking along suspension bridges high up in the treetops are just two activities that fit the bill for the adventurer looking for entertainment and thrills in this region. Its popularity equals large amounts of tourist traffic and high corresponding prices, but in the end, it is worth it all!
Day 8-10: Manuel Antonio & Uvita
Well… It’s time to wrap up your 10-day trip by spending some time on the Pacific coast. The towns of Quepos and Manuel Antonio are famous for their breathtaking beaches, diverse wildlife and excellent hiking trails. Not to be forgotten is another hidden treasure, Marino Ballena National Park. It is only a few dozen minutes’ drive from Quepos to the town of Uvita. This is where you can see the famous whale fin-shaped beach and take a long walk along the long and empty beaches. And who knows, maybe you will even be lucky enough to see a puma!

Best Time to Visit Costa Rica
So, when is the best time to visit Costa Rica? It really depends on what you want. There is two main seasons in Costa Rica: rainy and dry; each with its own beauty. The dry season lasts from November to April and is the time most people travel there for sunshine, beach days, and outdoor activities. You can be guaranteed warm and clear weather; in fact, if you are up for a 10-day itinerary in Costa Rica, this will be the time to go. You won’t be bothered by rain ruining your plans, so you can probably cover most of the important places in this paradise.
The other highlight is the green season, which runs from May to October. Yes, it rains, but the entire country grows with life, and there are fewer tourists. You get quiet beaches all to yourself and trails practically deserted. If you don’t mind a little rain, a 10-day Costa Rica itinerary during the green season can be equally amazing, with the added advantage that you will get a better deal on some stuff. So, when’s the best time to visit Costa Rica? It depends on what you want. If you want sunshine and clear skies, then dry season is for you. If you want fewer crowds and are okay with the rain, the green season might just surprise you.
